The Basics of Your Curl Care

Two important facts you need to know about caring for your afro hair and curls
Ever wondered what makes afro and curly hair different from straight hair? Contrary to the cliches, caring for curls isn't more time-consuming or harder than caring for straight hair, it's just different. You really just need to keep the two following facts in mind, they form the basis of curl care.
The unique structure of curly hair starts with the hair follicles, the cavity around the hair root. With curls and afro hair the follicle is curved, so when the hair grows out it bends and takes on its twisted shape.
This particularity has several effects you need to keep in mind when caring for your hair.
Moisture
At the follicle there's a gland producing your scalp's natural oils. Because of the curly structure this oil can't travel down the hair as easily. That's why curly hair tends to be dry. Make sure your hair gets plenty of moisture. Use the Afrolocke Conditioner and the Leave-In on wet or damp hair. Finish by sealing with the Afrolocke Hair Oil to protect against moisture loss.
From time to time treat your curls to a deep conditioning session for an extra moisture boost. Use the Afrolocke Conditioner on wet or damp hair under a shower cap and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes.
Protection against breakage
The many bends and twists in curly hair are weak spots and make the hair vulnerable to mechanical stress like combing, heat or friction.
So only comb your hair when wet or damp, using a wide-tooth comb, your fingers or a brush made for curls. Tip: use the time the Afrolocke Conditioner is sitting to detangle your hair, the product gives extra protection. Use a T-shirt or microfiber towel for drying. If you blow-dry, we recommend a diffuser attachment. Satin pillowcases and hair ties as well as protective styles (like buns or braids) are also a great idea.
Understanding your curls' basic needs can prevent frustration in your hair routine.
Your hair loves it when you work with its natural structure, not against it.
