Take your curl routine to the next level!

4c, 3a, 2b? If you're into curl care, you've probably come across these categories. Embrace your unique curl structure by finding the routine that fits you. To help, we explain how hair structures are categorized and show how that can help you better understand your curls' needs.

The hair structure categorization (1, 2a-c, 3a-c, 4a-c) was developed by hairstylist Andre Walker. First things first: we clearly distance ourselves from general judgments that one hair type is better or worse than another. Every hair type has its own strengths. Learn to understand and appreciate them!

Matching our expertise, we focus on hair types 2 to 4.

Type 2: enhance your curl definition

Type 2 a–c is wavy to slightly curly hair that doesn't shrink much and has less volume than types 3 and 4. Since the curls tend to fall flat, the focus of the routine is usually on boosting definition.

A suitable haircut can significantly improve this, so find a stylist who really knows curly hair. Also make sure to use products that don't weigh your hair down. Ideally choose a shampoo that doesn't dry your hair out and supports definition right from washing (liquid Afrolocke Shampoo). On top of that, our Curl Styling Gel defines your curls.

Type 3: hydrate your curls intensely

Type 3 a–c has larger to medium curls with high definition, medium volume and shrinkage, making the hair appear shorter than it actually is.

The curly structure makes it harder for natural scalp oils to travel down the hair, so type 3 hair tends to be dry. A pre-poo treatment with hair oil is recommended before washing. After washing, always use a rich Conditioner and the Afrolocke Leave-In, which supports your natural curl structure, hydrates and doesn't weigh hair down. At night, tie up your hair into a pineapple, ideally with a satin scrunchie that doesn't pull moisture from your hair.

Type 4: protect your hair from breakage

Tight, smaller curls fall into type 4. The hair is dense, has lots of volume and shrinks a lot. The tight curl pattern is prone to dryness and vulnerable to outside influences, making the hair more fragile. So give your hair intense hydration and seal in the moisture with our Afrolocke Hair Oil. About every two weeks, do a deep conditioning treatment with a rich conditioner. At night, protect your curls with a satin pillowcase or satin bonnet. Protective styles let your hair rest from time to time.

Thorough cleansing of hair and scalp is important for this denser hair type. Still use a mild shampoo that doesn't dry your hair out. Massage your scalp well and, if needed, wash your hair in sections and repeat.

The Growing Fro of the nonprofit Gurlz with Curlz has also shown how wonderfully unique and varied afro hair and curls are.

Our products are basically suited for all curl types. Best read the blog post: Why you should know your hair's porosity.
