A healthy scalp matters for your wellbeing and is essential for hair growth. The wrong hair products, washing too often and the climate can dry out your scalp.

A dry scalp can be uncomfortable and itchy. The tricky thing about a dry, itchy scalp is that it's often treated the wrong way. The dry flakes can look like dandruff, which is why many people reach for anti dandruff products. But these can be counterproductive, because they're often designed for a rather oily scalp.

A dry scalp needs to be cleansed well and at the same time needs lots of natural care. Here are the best tips on how to do exactly that. With a few simple routines you can ease the itching, remove buildup and balance the pH of your scalp.

Afrolocke Liquid Shampoo

Our liquid shampoo is ideal for your scalp. The blend of gentle surfactants and nourishing oils cleanses your scalp thoroughly but gently.

Deep cleansing

Every now and then you can add a deep cleanse. Apple cider vinegar works really well for this. Mix it 1:1 with water, pour it over your head in the shower and massage it into your scalp before rinsing. Repeating this once every one to two months should be enough.

Nourishing oil

Before washing, massage oil into your dry scalp (pre-poo). This stimulates circulation and protects your scalp from moisture loss while washing.

After washing and styling, you can finish by massaging a little oil into your scalp to seal in the moisture.

DIY refresh spray

You can quickly make your own spray to refresh your scalp in between washes. Mix 250 ml of distilled water with 10 to 15 drops of essential oils. Our favourites are rosemary (stimulates circulation, soothing), lavender (calming, eases itching, cleansing), mint (refreshing, revitalising), tea tree oil (cleansing) and lemon (stimulating, clarifying).

Whenever you need it, apply the spray to your scalp for quick relief.

Scalp massages

During pre-poo, washing, refreshing or just in between: your scalp loves being gently massaged. It stimulates circulation and helps loosen buildup. And last but not least, it's lovely and relaxing.

The easiest way is to use your fingers, but there are also special brushes for scalp massages.

Try out these tips! You'll probably notice quickly how much more comfortable your scalp feels. If none of this helps, it's a good idea to see a dermatologist.
